What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #202 Proofing
One of the things that folks need to not only be more aware of but also practice the hell out of is Proofing.
How many reps are you doing with your dogs? On your basic commands, sit/down/place/kennel up/recall training. you need to do hundreds if not over a thousands of reps of these commands under normal low distraction environments and once the dog understands what you want, what the command means and be doing the commands willingly. Then you start adding distractions and proof the dog on the distractions and then you add corrections for non compliance of those known commands.
Thats the magic to having a dog be profficient on the commands under high levels of distractions, its the accountability factor. Lots and lots of proofing under high level stress conditions. You do all this since in the real world life is stressful and there are lots of distractions out there.
