What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #187

Leash reactivity…is a problem and a so many folks struggle with it.

How did we get there? lots of different ways..but something to thing about with your dog training journey.

One thing to think about is the concept of allowing your dog to meet other dogs and people on your daily walks, which is the go to for so many folks when they get a dog. I get it, you want your dog to be social.

Unfortuntately this can go wrong a lot of the time..what turns into cute puppy behavior with your dog excited to meet people and dogs can turn into leash reactivity later. We hear from lots of people that once the dog turned anywhere from 9-15 months old a lot of the “happy” behaviors are now scary..and then owners can struggle for a very long time getting a handle on it and sometimes they surrender the dogor they can't go on walks when they want or at all. Your world with your dog gets very small when you have a leash reactive dog thats for sure.

Having a leash reactive dog does not mean you have an aggressive dog, they are actually 2 very different things.

One way to make sure this does not happen is to teach your dog proper leash manners from the start, turn the walk into a training exercise, just having your dog next to you without pulling on the leash and being around lots of dogs and people (but not going up to them to greet) will teach your dog to ignore all the different environmentals around you and not trigger on them.

Lots of folks look at this as being antisocial, the thing is there are way to many unknowns out there, by allowing your dog to meet people and other dogs, no matter how well your dog is, lots of folks and dogs that you may want to meet my not be aware of how there dog is or how it will respond to your dog and vice versa.

so use the walk at selfish time between you and the dog, have your dog next to you and just aware of you. Not responding to the environmentals around it, this is a great confidence builder as well and is an important part of the dog getting accustomed to all the different things out there, your dog does not have to interact with things to be great around them.
