What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #181

what is the first few things we do when a dog comes in for a board and train that you can also be doing at home with your dog no matter how long you have had your dog.

Whether your dog arrived at our home today or 5 years ago, these 2 protocols are not only important but a game changer in the relationship between you and the dog.

1) Default waiting at doors
2) Going in and out of the kennel on command

When a dog first coms into our training center, and after speaking with the owners for a little bit, they hand the dog over to us and we take the dog back to the kennel room to put the dog into a kennel. There is 2 doors that the dog needs to go through, at both doors we have the dog do a default sit, and then the dog goes into a kennel and the dog must pause before going in and then go in (whether the dog wants to go in or not is not an issue) the dog has to go in, we are a working kennel and that is where dogs are when not out training.

While in the crate, we don't allow any nonsense such as barking or attempting to get out of the crate, if they do not want to lie down at this point we leave that alone til further training.

When it is time to come out of the crate we open up the door, if the dog tries to come out we close the door quickly into the dog, we then open up the door and the dog does ot come out (on a slip lead) we will keep up with the door closing protocol. This just takes a couple of times. Then 2 more thresholds into the training room for the first official training sessions.

All of this is done with no words spoken (other than kennel up) we do not say sit/wait/stay/ look at me or anything. It is all done silently and with leash pressure.

These 2 trainining protocols are game changers with the dog/human relationships. It changes the whole attitude of the dog as well and they become way more handler aware and respectful.
